The youngest soul among them
was left in the car to die

Religious people are stupid. I’ve been saying it for years. Religion is the enemy of knowledge. People who put their faith in front of their common sense are asking for trouble, and they often find it.

Not as starkly as a young Florida couple did this past Sunday when they left their baby in the back seat of their car while they attended church for three hours in Palm Bay, Florida. The Mount of Olives Evangelical Baptist Church. For three hours! In the midday Sun where late May temperatures flirted with 90 degrees!

What is the point of religion? Isn’t it to worship the awesome power that gave us our lives? Isn’t it to pray for protection for those we love? Not only ourselves, but our parents and all our children?

What important thing were they doing ignoring the welfare of their baby while inside an air conditioned church asking the Almighty to save heir lives when they — in an unconscious and oblivious state, presumably engulfed in rapturous religious zeal — were needlessly squandering the life of their child with their self-righteous ignorance.

For my money, this is the real power of religion, the power to lose your mind and your common sense — and for what? To some sense that are hedging your bets to get eternal life at the cost of destroying the life of your abandoned baby?!

Praise the Lord! He works in mysterious ways, right? He makes you lose your mind, right?

It is my understanding that the real value of religion is not the fantastic tale of rising from the dead after three days in the tomb — or on the cross of your own choosing — and then rising up to heaven to go bowling with the angels forever.

No, the real value of religion is fellowship, taking care of your neighbors and sharing their problems with compassion and understanding. That’s the real value of religion — or should be. Knowing your neighbors, and caring for them, is what makes a successful and secure community, not to mention country.

So first of all, those pudding brained parents, deceived by their religion into forgetting about their child, should be charged with involuntary manslaughter, and pay a serious public penalty for their stupidity. They have forfeited their right to condolences.

But so should the other people in the congregation, all pretending to be so pious. Why couldn’t one of them in this close community of parishioners knowing this couple had a newborn child to be added to their congregation simply mention to them, “Oh where’s that darling little bundle of joy today? Why isn’t she here with us so we could see her? You know babies make everybody smile whether they want to or not.”

But nobody thought to say that. I guess they were just a gathering of strangers and hypocrites intent of saving their own souls and to hell with everybody else’s.

The preacher definitely also should be charged with accessory to involuntary manslaughter, because he’s supposed to know intimately everybody in his congregation, since he’s supposed to be in charge of their immortal souls. I guess he forgot about the soul of that baby in the car because he was thinking too much about the spare change in the collection plate, a common if not universal problem with preachers.

He probably still hasn’t realized the devil was running his own show since his devotion to his preaching cost the youngest member of his congregation her life. Wonder what Jesus thinks about that?

One can’t help but wonder if this lethal brain fog resulting in the unexpected deaths of babies is not a more common problem in the wider world, where everyone is concentrating on saving their own souls while millions of others are dropping dead unexpectedly because of the advice of authorities they have been forced to believe.
